RUSSIAN TV INTERVIEW

Here is an interview done by City Release Kirov News during my recent trip to Russia. While there, I worked with engineers at FabLab Studios to design a monumental sculpture for the city of Kirov.

The sixteen foot sculpture, "Eternity", that I designed is currently being fabricated and will be installed early next year.

Russia Update

I am currently in Kirov, working on a project to create monumental sonic sculptures for the city. I got to watch myself on television last night. People are actually recognizing me in the street from a recent local newspaper article.

Today I did a radio interview and made about 50 videos of people for a Matroyeshka doll sculpture I am creating. We are now planning a Friday night lecture I am giving and then I meet with an engineering club!

I should add that, during the TV interview, I was interviewing other people (it was very interesting) and asking them what they hope for the future of their city, the world and for their children. Almost all of them said that they want peace and that Americans and Russians should love each other.

It has been a wonderful trip so far!

SCULPTURE OF THE WEEK

I am currently creating "The Little Mermaid" at 18" for a collector in Maui, Hawaii. Years ago, I went to Copenhagen with my daughter. We visited the famous statue of The Little Mermaid on the rocky shores of the city. I wanted to create my own version of this beautiful sculpture. Here she is in bronze on a coral base. She is now available in bronze at 6" and 18" and in bronzed carbomate (high density urethane coated with a thin layer of bronze) at 3'. I just began a new mermaid that will be much darker in spirit.  In a few months we will be opening the new gallery in my home and you can all come and see all my work finally in a beautiful atmosphere with perfect lighting. We have a few surprises in store.

SCULPTURE OF THE WEEK

This week, I wanted to share the story behind a piece that my gallery in Maui sold today, "Above it All".

Rene Auberjonois is an actor (“Odo” in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine) who owned land with me in the woods of New Hampshire. He used to draw happy little figures that, later on, inspired me to draw a girl dancing on top of a blue sphere. Here she is in bronze on a stainless steel sphere, above the earth, the universe, her own universe.

To commission in any size, please email bronzes@ninawinters.com.

ARK CISUR MAGAZINE

See the article written about my work in Ark Cisur International Magazine (Chile):

http://www.arkcisur.com/contenido.php?sec=3

Here is a translation of an excerpt from the editorial-

"Born and raised in New York, Nina was educated at the School of Fine Arts and Architecture at Cornell University, the School of Visual Arts, Parsons School of Design and Hunter Graduate School.

Nina Began her career as an artist in the field of illustration, working for clients such as Bantam Books, Columbia Records, the Plaza Athenee Hotel in New York and Northwest Airlines.

Shortly after college, Nina began doing three-dimensional art, after having a dream of monumental bronzes withstanding the test of time to create a positive message to society.

Now Nina is living that dream. With her bronze sculptures in collections around the world, and numerous monumental projects (including a 2.3 meter x 2.8 meter commission by Vice President of PepsiCo), Nina is making a name for herself in internationally.

And unlike most contemporary artists, her work speaks less of what the human condition is, but what it can be."

They also arranged my next major show at the end of March in Florence, Italy.

INSIDE A COLLECTOR'S HOME

My sculpture, "Fly, Fly, Little Wing" at one of my collector's beautiful homes in Puerto Rico. This piece was inspired by Celine Dion's song, "Fly". A young girl leaves her body and flies away. It takes the sadness out of death and turns it into the beauty of finding new life.

("Fly, fly, little wing,
Far beyond imagining,
The moon will rise,
The sun will set,
But I won't forget...")

I sold two editions of this sculpture last week- one to a couple from Boca and another from my gallery in Texas.

To get your own edition of "Fly, Fly, Little Wing", call or email my office: 727.804.1444 or bronzes@ninawinters.com.

MY FIRST SET OF GLASS SCULPTURES

I just created my first series of glass sculptures, three Native American heads.

The glass sand casting process involves the use of hot molten glass poured directly into a mould. The sand mould is typically prepared by using a mixture of clean sand and a small proportion of the water-absorbing clay bentonite. Bentonite acts as a binding material.

In the process, a small amount of water is added to the sand-bentonite mixture and this is well mixed and sifted before addition to an open topped container. A template is prepared (typically made of wood, or a found object or even a body part such as a hand or fist) which is tightly pressed into the sand to make a clean impression. This impression then forms the mould.

The surface of the mould can be covered in coloured glass powders to give a surface colour to the sand cast glass sculpture. When the mould preparation is complete hot glass is ladled from the furnace and poured directly into the mould.

 -(source Wikipedia: Glass Casting)

Here are some images from the process:

Sand, bentonite and colored glass powders in the molds

 Pouring the molten glass

Placing a rod in the first glass head

 Coloring the glass

Removing the sculptures from the sand

This piece will now have all sand removed from it
and be attached to a steel ribcage and custom base.
