NEWEST SCULPTURE

My recently completed sculpture, "Liberté".
This bronze piece was Inspired by the French national anthem “Le Marseillaise”.

Through the ages, conflicts have been waged through bloody battles on the fields and shores of distant nations.

We now need to win the fight within ourselves.

The sanguine patina on this angel (sanguine – blood red – from the French word “blood”) is an aesthetic symbol for the heart and life force within us.

SCULPTURE OF THE WEEK

This week I wanted to share the inspiration for my sculpture, "Angel de la Vida". First cast in bronze, I then patina her with fire and chemicals and create subtle nuances with metallic powders and waxes, filling her robes with the colors and passions of life. Throughout art history, angels are frequently depicted in heaven above the clouds. I brought the clouds into her drapery and attached her to a steel circle, giving the illusion that she is floating above the material universe. She can be commissioned in any size. SCULPTURE OF THE WEEK

I had an incredible experience recently, while selling one of my sculptures. A woman came to an art exhibition I was part of - after the show was over - and began looking around. Her eye kept going to my sculpture, "The One Who Learned to Fly", so I told her the story behind the piece:

When my daughter was young, I made her a costume with fabric wings. I realized that she thought the wings were real - and when I had to tell her that they weren't, she began to cry. I looked her in the eye and promised her that this lifetime, spiritually, emotionally or physically, she would learn to fly.

When I finished telling the woman about the inspiration for this sculpture, she began to cry. She told me how much the story meant to her, how she had gone through something  similar and how she NEEDED the sculpture for her collection.

It is incredible for an artist when a piece speaks to someone and brings about such a strong emotional response. It is my "raison d'etre" (reason for being).

SCULPTURE OF THE WEEK

This week I wanted to share a bit about my piece, "Angel de la Vida" (Angel of Life). Her robes are filled with the colors and passions of life. First cast in bronze and patinaed with fire and chemicals, I then create subtle nuances with metallic powders and waxes. Throughout art history, angels are frequently depicted in heaven above the clouds. I brought the clouds into her drapery and attached her to a steel circle, giving the illusion that she is floating above the material universe.

SCULPTURES OF THE WEEK 11/23

I have posted about these pieces, but I wanted to celebrate with you that I sold both of these sculptures within the past week! The one who Learned to fly is a sculpture dedicated to my daughter. The message is that we can all learn to fly, spiritually, physically or emotionally. The Galactic Samurai is a piece dedicated to a very well known figure who has done far more than most, and to all the beings that reach out across space and time to fight for what they believe in.

SCULPTURE OF THE WEEK 10/17/11

This week I wanted to focus on my sculpture "Angel de la Vida" (Angel of Life). I first created this piece in clay, then cast it in bronze. Her robes are filled with the colors and passions of life. I patinaed her with fire and chemicals, and created subtle nuances with metallic powders and waxes. Throughout art history, angels are frequently depicted in heaven above the clouds. I brought the clouds into her drapery and attached her to a custom made stainless steel circle, giving the illusion that she is floating above the material universe.

Sculpture breakdown "The One Who Learned to Fly"

I wanted to start a weekly tradition of posting a piece on my Facebook pages and explaining a bit about it. For this first week, I chose my sculpture "The One Who Learned to Fly." When my daughter Hana-li was little, I made her a costume with wings. I suddenly realized that she thought she would actually be able to fly with these wings. When she understood that they weren't real wings, she began to cry. I sat her down and promised her that in this lifetime, spiritually, emotionally or physically, she would learn to fly. This is sculpture is dedicated to her. It incorporates elements from "Cirque du Soleil" and Japanese anime to create a mix of edgy fantasy and inspiration. It is cast in bronze, with wings of bronze, silver, copper and parachute material. I subtly colored it with Patinas (chemical powders that react with the bronze) and metallic waxes.
